YOM KIPPUR BREAKING FAST: QUICHE, BROCCOLI, KUGEL
CRUSTLESS QUICHE WITH FETA AND ASPARAGUS
8 Servings
**Note: This recipe has not been tested in or styled by the Bon Appetit Test Kitchen.**
INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon butter
16 stalks of asparagus, bottoms trimmed
5 eggs
1/2 cup half-and-half
1/2 cup lowfat sour cream
1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt (plus more for seasoning)
Pinch of black pepper (plus more for seasoning)
Pinch of nutmeg
3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese (sheep or goat milk feta is preferable)
1/2 cup chopped scallions (both green and white parts)
1/2 cup chopped parsley
Nonstick vegetable oil spray
PREPARATION
Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut 2 inches off the thick ends of the asparagus spears, discard those tough ends. Chop the asparagus into 1/2-inch pieces. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the asparagus pieces to the skillet. Season them with salt and pepper, then sauté them for about 5 minutes until tender-crisp. Remove from heat and allow asparagus to cool.
In a large mixing bowl beat the eggs. Whisk in the half and half, sour cream, white pepper, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Incorporate the crumbled feta, scallions, parsley and asparagus pieces into the mixture with a large spoon.
Liberally grease a 9-inch pie plate with cooking spray. Pour the quiche mixture directly into the pie plate. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the quiche is nicely browned. Stick a sharp knife or toothpick in the center of the quiche to test for doneness--if it comes out clean, it's done. Let quiche settle at least 10 minutes before serving.
Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled depending on your preference. DO AHEAD: Once it has cooled, quiche can be stored covered with plastic wrap up to 5 days in the refrigerator. To reheat, place it in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes. Quiche will warm up more evenly if you cut it into individual pieces prior to reheating.
How is Yom Kippur Observed? (quoted)

How is Yom Kippur Observed?
An Overview of Yom Kippur's Traditions and Customs
Yom Kippur commemorates the day that G‑d forgave the Jewish people for the sin of the Golden Calf. Forty days after hearing G‑d say at Mount Sinai: "You shall not have the gods of others in My presence; you shall not make for yourself a graven image," the Jews committed the cardinal sin of idolatry. Moses spent nearly three months on top of the mountain pleading with G‑d for forgiveness, and on the tenth of Tishrei it was finally granted: "I have pardoned, as you have requested."
From that moment on, this date, henceforth known as the Day of Atonement, is annually observed as a commemoration of our special relationship with G‑d, a relationship that is strong enough to survive any rocky bumps it might encounter. This is a day when we connect with the very essence of our being, which remains faithful to G‑d regardless of our outward behavior.
And while it is the most solemn day of the year, we are also joyful, confident that G‑d will forgive our sins and seal our verdict for a year of life, health, and happiness.
For nearly twenty-six hours – from several minutes before sunset on Tishrei 9 until after nightfall on Tishrei 10 – we "afflict our souls": we abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear, and abstain from spousal intimacy. We are likened to the angels, who have no physical needs. Instead of focusing on the physical, we spend much of our day in the synagogue, engaged in repentance and prayer.
Preparations
On the day before Yom Kippur, the primary mitzvah is to eat and drink in abundance. Two festive meals are eaten, one earlier in the day, and one just prior to the onset of Yom Kippur. Some of the day's other observances include requesting and receiving honey cake, in acknowledgement that we are all recipients in G‑d's world and in prayerful hope for a sweet year; begging forgiveness from anyone whom we may have wronged during the past year; giving extra charity; and the ceremonial blessing of the children. Before sunset, women and girls light holiday candles, and everyone makes their way to the synagogue for the Kol Nidrei services.
On Yom Kippur
In the course of Yom Kippur we will hold five prayer services: 1) Maariv, with its solemn Kol Nidrei service, on the eve of Yom Kippur; 2) Shacharit—the morning prayer; 3) Musaf, which includes a detailed account of the Yom Kippur Temple service; 4) Minchah, which includes the reading of the Book of Jonah. Finally, in the waning hours of the day, we reach the climax of the day: the fifth prayer, the Neilah ("locking") prayer. The gates of Heaven, which were open all day, will now be closed—with us on the inside. During this prayer we have the ability to access the most essential level of our soul. The Holy Ark remains open throughout. The closing Neilah service climaxes in the resounding cries of "Hear O Israel... G‑d is one." Then joy erupts in song and dance (a Chabad custom is to sing the lively "Napoleon's March"), followed by a single blast of the shofar, and the proclamation, "Next year in Jerusalem."
After the fast we partake of a festive after-fast meal, making the evening after Yom Kippur a Yom Tov (festival) in its own right. We immediately begin to look forward to the next holiday and its special mitzvah: the construction of the sukkah.

Journey to see God: Genesis 1-2 “wonderfully made in God's image and likeness”
The
watchman continued his “journey to see God” in the Book
of Genesis, as led by the Holy Spirit, and he seeks the Lord
daily as in Psalm 24:6 (“This is Jacob, the generation of those who
seek Him, who seek Your face.”) While seeking the Lord, he beholds
the wonders that truly, “The earth is the Lord's, and all its
fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1)
The
more he sees the more he is filled with awesome admiration for the
Almighty God, Who has revealed Himself as the Creator and the
Provider for all who have breath on earth. One thing that stands
out in the revelation of these verses is that God is very
particular about every detail of His design and pattern. The pattern
for earth is in the word of God, the Bible. He required His creation
to follow exactly to His original design which He considers as
“GOOD”! After man sinned and had fallen short of God's glory, God
provided a second creation for all who believe in Jesus Christ and
His salvation on the cross, this time, through the supernatural born
again experience by exactly the same ingredients: the Holy Spirit and
the incorruptible seed of God -the word of God! We are specifically
told by Jesus that the new creation is born of God and is of the
image and likeness of God, Who is Spirit. (Joh 1:12-13, 3:5-6,
4:23-24; 1 Pet.1:23)
This
is the most important truth for all who seek God.
(The
watchman's notes are in brackets after the following respective
verses as he read them.)
THE MAKE OF MANKIND: ACCORDING TO THE IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF GOD
Genesis 1:26-30
26 Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, in the likeness of ourselves; and let them rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the animals, and over all the earth, and over every crawling creature that crawls on the earth.” 27 So God created humankind in his own image; in the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.28 God blessed them: God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air and every living creature that crawls on the earth.” 29 Then God said, “Here! Throughout the whole earth I am giving you as food every seed-bearing plant and every tree with seed-bearing fruit. 30 And to every wild animal, bird in the air and creature crawling on the earth, in which there is a living soul, I am giving as food every kind of green plant.” And that is how it was. 31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed it was very good. So there was evening, and there was morning, a sixth day.
(In
the beginning, God already stated that He rules over all.
However, He made humankind in His image and likeness, so that they
could be given the power of attorney to rule over all the earth in
His name. As long as humankind
remain in God's image and likeness, they may carry out this kingly
responsibility.)
(Jesus has
similarly warned on this subject: in John 15:4-6 4 “Abide in
Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless
it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in
him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If
anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is
withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they
are burned.” )
(As
Jesus has declared, unless Christians are of the image and likeness
of Jesus Himself, they are of no use in the kingdom of God!)
GOD
DESIGNED AN IDEAL LIFE FOR MANKIND AND ALL LIVING CREATURES
Genesis 2 (CJB)
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them. 2 On the seventh day God was finished with his work which he had made, so he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 God blessed the seventh day and separated it as holy; because on that day God rested from all his work which he had created, so that it itself could produce.
(God
showed how He designed an ideal life. He created a brand new
world and made sure everything was well and orderly and provided the
best for the inhabitants. He set out one day to mark the completion
and at the same time to provide refreshment for those who abide in
His rest. Only by drawing near to God and resting in the presence
of God can one be refreshed and made ready for the next phase of good
work. To God the day of rest is set apart for Him only. No one is
to pursue self interest on that day. God only asks for one day out of
seven days. But the carnal Christians complain that is too much!)
ONLY
GOD CAN PROVIDE THE BEST ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES FOR AN IDEAL LIFE
ON EARTH
(A: iv, S: ii) 4 Here is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created. On the day when Adonai, God, made earth and heaven, 5 there was as yet no wild bush on the earth, and no wild plant had as yet sprung up; for Adonai, God, had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no one to cultivate the ground. 6 Rather, a mist went up from the earth which watered the entire surface of the ground.
(Even
the growth of wild plants require the rain input from God.
When God stops rain no plants can grow. Just look at the
horrors of prolonged drought around the world today and we
know how true this is! Man can never create water out of nothing.)
MEN
AND TREES WERE MADE FROM THE SAME MATERIALS: DUST
7 Then Adonai, God, formed a person from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, so that he became a living being. 8 Adonai, God, planted a garden toward the east, in ‘Eden, and there he put the person whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground Adonai, God, caused to grow every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
(God
created man and trees out of the earth/ground. Yet He treated the man
as special. He gave man His breath to make him alive. He even took
care to make sure the trees are pleasing to look at and good for food
so the man would be attracted to eat them and survive on earth!)
WATERS
FROM HEAVEN AND WATERS FROM EARTH
10 A river went out of ‘Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided into four streams. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it winds throughout the land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. 13 The name of the second river is Gichon; it winds throughout the land of Kush. 14 The name of the third river is Tigris; it is the one that flows toward the east of Ashur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
(God
cares for the earth He created. He provides rivers of
waters for the earth. The physical rivers store waters for the
earth. Rivers on earth can run dry. There are spiritual storehouses
for waters in heavens. When the windows of heaven are opened, the
rain pours down, as in the case of the great flood at Noah's time.
Rain from heaven evidences God's blessings. Duet.28:12a (CEB) “The
Lord will open up for you his own well-stocked
storehouse, the heavens, providing your land with rain at just the
right time and blessing all your work.” )
(Note
the provision of “rivers
of living water for the hearts” of those who believe in Jesus, John
7:38.
Like the earth, man's body needs physical water to survive. However,
there is now another “water” which man's total survival must
have, the Spirit of the Lord. The Holy Spirit in the believers flows,
nourishes and strengthens the inner man. Praying in the Spirit is an
important way to tap into this mighty river within us.)

The eternal God is your refuge
This message is about the refuge Christians have in God and is especially for all those who are in the risk of no longer having God's canopy over them.
Deuteronomy 33:26-28 (NKJV) 26 “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, Who rides the heavens to help you, And in His excellency on the clouds. 27 The eternal God is your refuge, And underneath are the everlasting arms; He will thrust out the enemy from before you, And will say, ‘Destroy!’
28 Then Israel shall dwell in safety, The fountain of Jacob alone, In a land of grain and new wine; His heavens shall also drop dew.
Ruth 2:11-13 (NKJV) 11 And Boaz answered and said to her, “It has been fully reported to me, all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know before. 12 The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.” 13 Then she said, “Let me find favor in your sight, my lord; for you have comforted me, and have spoken kindly to your maidservant, though I am not like one of your maidservants.”
2 Samuel 22:2-4 2 And he said:[a] “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; 3 The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. 4 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.
Psalm 9:8-10 (NKJV) 8 He shall judge the world in righteousness, And He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness. 9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble.
10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
Isaiah 4:5-6(NKJV) 5 then the Lord will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering. 6 And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.
Hebrews 6:17-19 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might[a] have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. 19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,
Footnotes: Hebrews 6:18 M-Text omits might.
Jeremiah 16:18-20 (NKJV) 18 And first I will repay double for their iniquity and their sin, because they have defiled My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable and abominable idols.”
19 O Lord, my strength and my fortress, My refuge in the day of affliction, The Gentiles shall come to You
From the ends of the earth and say, “Surely our fathers have inherited lies, Worthlessness and unprofitable things.” 20 Will a man make gods for himself, Which are not gods?
Jeremiah 4:5-7 (NKJV) An Imminent Invasion 5 Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: “Blow the trumpet in the land; Cry, ‘Gather together,’ And say, ‘Assemble yourselves, And let us go into the fortified cities.’ 6 Set up the standard toward Zion. Take refuge! Do not delay! For I will bring disaster from the north, And great destruction.” 7 The lion has come up from his thicket, And the destroyer of nations is on his way. He has gone forth from his place To make your land desolate. Your cities will be laid waste, Without inhabitant.
Isaiah 26:19-21(NKJV) 19 Your dead shall live; Together with my dead body[a] they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; For your dew is like the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead. Take Refuge from the Coming Judgment 20 Come, my people, enter your chambers, And shut your doors behind you; Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment, Until the indignation is past. 21 For behold, the Lord comes out of His place To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; The earth will also disclose her blood,
And will no more cover her slain.
Footnotes: Isaiah 26:19 Following Masoretic Text and Vulgate; Syriac and Targum read their dead bodies; Septuagint reads those in the tombs.
Proverbs 14:25-27 (NKJV) 25 A true witness delivers souls, But a deceitful witness speaks lies. 26 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, To turn one away from the snares of death.
God
is a refuge for the oppressed, the poor, His anointed, His people,
who trusts Him, those whose souls trust in the Lord, those who pour
out their hearts before Him, who continually resort to Him, who have
the fear of the Lord, the righteous.

Nehemiah 13:11-1311 I immediately confronted the leaders and demanded, “Why has the Temple of God been neglected?” Then I called all the Levites back again and restored them to their proper duties. 12 And once more all the people of Judah began bringing their tithes of grain, new wine, and olive oil to the Temple storerooms. 13 I assigned supervisors for the storerooms: Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites. And I appointed Hanan son of Zaccur and grandson of Mattaniah as their assistant. These men had an excellent reputation, and it was their job to make honest distributions to their fellow Levites.

The Dangers of the Last Days
The Dangers of the Last Days
3 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For
people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful
and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and
ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They
will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no
self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!
6 They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of[a] vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires. 7 (Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.) 8 These teachers oppose the truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith. 9 But
they won’t get away with this for long. Someday everyone will recognize
what fools they are, just as with Jannes and Jambres.Paul’s Charge to Timothy
10 But
you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my
purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my
endurance. 11 You
know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all
about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—but the Lord
rescued me from all of it. 12 Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived.
14 But
you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know
they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. 15 You
have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have
given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in
Christ Jesus. 16 All
Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and
to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we
are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Perilous Times and Perilous Men
Timothy 3
New King James Version (NKJV)Perilous Times and Perilous Men
3 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.The Man of God and the Word of God
10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
